Started out with this plan three years ago-NO PROBLEM- I got two $12.00 Uniden cordless phones hook to this MagicJack Plus.In the last year I had too unplug MagicJack Plus from router and replug it in about two times because of the noise generated by lighten and all the other junk that creating noise on the Web.Who has perfect hearing?(I talk they listen they talk I listen)For the price too talk and listen or listen and talk.Sound kinda stupid to paid any more for this service.

Be careful of MJ's terms of service. Not all outbound calls are included. Customers must purchase prepaid minutes for some calls, including in our case, calls to a friend we call frequently. Our friend is served by a typical traditional rural telephone company. Chats with customer service are like communicating with a robot.
VISITOR/PROVIDER FEEDBACK:
Comment by Sylvia on 6/2/2013 : I tried out Magic Jack from Futureshop for 3 weeks but returned within the 31 day return period. There is no Canadian portability at all. They will offer Canadian telephone numbers at $10.00. There is no 911 even if you want to pay for this service. Technical Support does not live on this planet anywhere. Good luck trying to get hold of either a person or a computer generated response. And their phone numbers are very secret. It doesn't take 1-2 minutes to set up - more like 45 mins. My router is in the basement so all phone calls must be within a few feet of your router. There is no ability to add extension phones which would ring elsewhere in the house. Going to try out VOIP.MS which has all of these features that Magic Jack doesn't.
Comment by Mikey on June 30th 2013 : I have nine(9) phones throughout the house. All of which work just fine using the house wiring.

Overall, the service is at a good price. Customer service is at the bottom of any telecom service I have used so far. If nothing is wrong with the network and everything is stable, it works OK i can make calls and receive calls most of the time. However, some local calls becomes long distance and Magic jack cannot explain why. So some of my local friends have to use their cell phone to call me. That uses their call time minutes. Some calls that are local I cannot call. Some how it is rated as long distance and Magic Jack cannot explain why nor would they even look at it with a trouble ticket. The customer service is totally useless and just repeated the same message that I need to order long distance to call a local number. The whole purpose in getting magic jack is so I do not need to pay LD. If I have to pay LD to make a local call, that defeats the purpose. Fortunately the number of local calls that got turn into LD is small enough I can use my cell phone to call. At one point in time the magic jack failed, It took me a total of 5 calls to customer service, 4 escalation to their super tech, 3 download to reload my pc and magic jack to convince them the magic jack has failed and it should be replaced. I pay for the regular magic jack. However, the shipping cost of the replacement unit is half the regular price of magic jack. I feel like I had pay for the new magic jack all over again. because I bought the 5 year plan, would be an awful waste to let 4 year service paid go so I ended up paying the heavy shipping. Magic jack has lots of improvement to go. However, it seems to be the cheapest voip on the market for now.

General Comments: I have a Magic Jack (original type) about 4 years now, and it only works through the USB on the computer. Occasionally, I find it off, and when I do, I just unplug it wait about 5 seconds, and plug it back in and it reloads itself in less than 30 seconds, and I'm back in business. I originally bought it to eliminate my long distance phone calls. We bought a cell phone about 8 years ago to carry with us in the car, but instead of paying a monthly bill, we buy minutes. Then near the end of the year, we buy $10.00 worth of minutes at 10 cents a minute in order to carry over our balance. Then, we had a landline phone in the house that was costing us $30.00/mo. and were having problems with it, so when I recently bought a Smart TV, I needed a router to go with it, I decided to go with a MAGIC JACK PLUS, and everything (router, magic jack, 3 remote phones with chargers and answering machine, and one years service) cost me a total of $240.00. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and have not even had to reboot it or anything. I still use the other one on my computer. Had my landline phone number assigned to the magic jack plus. Now, I can leave the computer on or off, and it makes no difference on the house phones. When it's time to renew the service on the old magic jack, I'll just cancel it, because I don't need both of them now. Rating Comments: Ease of Ordering: Did not order, bought it all at the local radio shack-- About a 3.0, because I had to make up my mind and made two trips to the store. Ease of set-up: This wasn't too hard as the instructions were pretty plain, and if you take it one step at a time, no problem. I had never did this before, so didn't want to mess up and probably wasted more time re-reading the instructions than actually doing it. Features available: 4.0 Having an older Magic Jack, I did a little experimenting after I finished with the Magic Jack Plus installation. I had a Galveston number on the old one, and had my landline number on the new one and my computer is on Cable. I called from the Magic Jack to the Magic Jack Plus to get the ringers as loud as I wanted them. Sound quality: 4.0 Better than most cell phones. Reliability: Sort of hard to rate as I haven't had the Magic Jack Plus but about a month, but so far no problems. The old one would fail sometimes when the computer would download updates to programs. If no dial tone, just unplug for about 5 seconds, and plug it back in and wait approximately a minute for it to automatically reload. When I registered mine on the computer, it automatically transferred my phone numbers to the addresses on the monitor dialer from the old Magic Jack. Since you can turn the computer on and off without disrupting it, the only other problem that I see, is how often you have electrical problems and then not being too experienced with a router, don't know what to expect. I asuume that soon as the power is restored, it would reload itself. I'll give it a 4.8 and hope my guess work is good. Customer service: What service? I never called them, and I registered it by plugging it into the USB port of my computer. Most items like this, when you need them, it's a problem to find a number to call. I can't make a good call on this one so am giving it a 4.5. Value for money: This is a hard one to rate, because I wanted a good router for my new tv, and I figured three phones with the answering machine would be sufficient. For an additional $10.00, I could have gotten 4 phones instead of 3. I'm going to give this one a 4.8, because the reliability of my old one has been so good. Sincerely, Lloyd.

After having the MJ+ for about a month, and getting it connected so it is reliable(router, not usb port), very pleased for the price and will disconnect Comcast Voip. I miss the call blocking i have with Comcast, but a couple of complaints to the FTC took care of the constant calls from a previous vendor. Very happy with it for the price, but if u don't have the patience or minimum knowledge to connect it reliably, I would recommend something easier with better customer service. When MJ+ putzes out, will definitely look into other voip companies. Comcast provides excellent product/service in my area, but for the price and amount I utilize the service, a less expensive alternative is worth the effort and slight inconvenience. If u can hang tuff while getting the MJ installed, would definitely recommend. Works best with newer, wireless computer systems in my opinion.

I had Magic Jack, changed to Magic Jack plus in hopes of better service. Customer service wants $40 just to talk to you. I paid enough for the system. If they could provide better service by charging a small monthly fee, $5 or less, it might be worthwhile. As it is, it's a waist of money.

Magic Jack customer service is lousy. They want to charge $39 to answer a question. Not a good way to do business. I started with the regular MJ and paid for five (5) years service. I had trouble with dropped calls, so I went to the MJ Plus system. After a couple of months use, the Plus system failed. They sent a new Plus unit, and it worked fine until this morning. Maybe 6 months. This morning, it was dead. I plugged in my old system and could get a dial tone, but couldn't dial out. I went on line for Customer Service. They want to charge me, just to talk to me. A real Rip-off.

Gotta deal, so bought it(40 bucks). They need MUCH better written instructions for install. Works best run thru router with in line phone filter and newer phone. My home phone was ported over in about 3 days(20 bucks). u have to set it up thru usb or mj website won't recognize ur mj. Not as reliable and voice quality suffers if kept in usb port. Dialpad probably won't show up on computer screen if run thru router. that's ok for my needs. Adjusted ring time on mj website so my panasonic phone picks up vm instead of mj vm. works great. all portable extensions work. voice quality now as good as cable company. miss my true caller id and call blocking but for the savings, I'll live with it. Didn't have either 10 years ago, my world did not end. Customer service is not in U.S. if u look closely at replies. Ignore all the requests for extra money from mj, no worse than a car salesman, say no. keep ur cell as backup. if electric or internet goes down, so does mj. that happened anyway with Comcast phone service. so far, in it for 60 bucks a year versus 40-50 for comcast voip per month. letting mj "test" until end of march, if still happy, will end cable voip service. if not sure about mj, check out the other voip products on this website. if purchasing a voip product thru a retailer, try to go to someone who knows computers and internet. Best Buy has helped me with numerous problems/questions and dissuades me from purchasing things that may not work. Do ur homework first. A DIY phone voip may not be for u regardless of product.

Avoid this company at all costs. Their customer service, if you can find the phone number, is incredibly rude and they are told to read from a script that may or may not have something to do with your issue. I was hung up on and treated like a child. Their service does not appear to be US based, and they only want to kick you off the phone line. Their online support is even worse, with an inability to answer questions and often repeating the same information over and over even after you have told them that is not what the problem is. STAY AWAY! They are not interested in resolving your problems and then give you a bunch of legal jargon that has NOTHING to do with your problem.

MAGICJACK is not as cheap as the commercials would lead you to believe! Not by a long shot! It's just more clever in how it gets your money. And, MOVING YOUR CURRENT PHONE NUMBER TO MAGICJACK ESPECIALLY PROVES TO BE A BIG MISTAKE! I can't say that the call quality of MAGICJACK was too bad, but I can say-- without any doubt-- that I will never deal with this company again! I even had been sort of a cheerleader for MAGICJACK, in particular at a party where a guy, who had ported his number, was talking about how awful the company and call quality are. But it turns out, he's right about the company! After his terrible experience, rather than pay the company another dime he ended up leaving his longtime home phone number with MAGICJACK. If you port your number, the MAGICJACK Company actually makes more money if you leave it after a year than if you stay with it--not much of an incentive to provide great service. While some companies will move your current number to them for free, and others charged around $20.00, MAGICJACK charges around $30.00. Plus--THEY CHARGE YOU AN EXTRA FEE FOR HAVING THE IMPORTED NUMBER EACH YEAR that you keep it there! More importantly, if you're dissatisfied and you want to take your number back--they have the nerve to charge you roughly $30.00 to get back your number! These fees are all on top of their usual fees. Other things to keep in mind: 1) they say you don't need a computer for MAGICJACK Plus, but you do need a high speed of router. 2) MAGICJACK Plus is about $10.00 more expensive than MAGICJACK, which does plug into your computer. 3) Usually, your electricity bill for keeping your computer on 24/7 will far outweigh any savings if you use the MAGICJACK that plugs into the computer! 4) MAGICJACK doesn't have a phone number of its own. You cannot actually talk to anyone at the company if you have a dispute of any kind. You have to type your argument back and forth with someone who's English understanding is questionable. 5) Finally, be aware that the FCC law requires MAGICJACK to release your number within 48 hours even if you owe the company money. (I took my credit card number off their website, and advise the person on the other end of the chat to bill me.) Long story short--IMHO there are too many good companies out there to choose from with upfront pricing, so there's no reason to use a company that's set up to make more money if a customer leaves them if he stays!
